When you do your first install of WordPress, it will use the default theme. Now the theme determines what your site will look like, so you’ll want to change it.

But before you do, have a look at the things this default theme does, for a couple of reasons:

  • Firstly, to familiarise yourself with how WordPress presents the different sections of your site,
  • To see some useful features that may NOT be included in other templates you download (so you can copy the code to those templates), and
  • To make a couple more useful ADMIN changes…

The Default Theme Features

Your home page shows the last TEN posts made - you might like to change the number of posts shown. Do that through ADMIN/OPTIONS and then the READING tab and change the value under BLOG PAGES.

While here, change the number of posts that appear under SYNDICATION FEEDS as well… I like to include 50 (or more) in a busy site with lots of posts, and I’ll only include a SUMMARY of the post in my RSS feeds, because I only want to tempt people and encourage them to visit my site, rather than give them take-away.

Now - go back to your home page…
