I’m just in the process of adding some different themes to try out.
You’ll see them listed in the sidebar – I hope
Remember a couple of things when you try this at home…
- You need to use the code for the Theme Switcher plugin in every template to be able to switch between them (that’s what I hope I’ve done right LOL)and
- My default/preferred theme at the moment is iTheme, so if you can’t get back to it, then click here to restore – hopefully that link will work
The themes I’m installing today to have a look at are:
- blog.txt – text and white space featured
- bobbles – dark and too wide for my screen
- chillblue-1 – two RH columns white and blue
- durable – colourful, different layout – has potential, esp the colour customisation for visitors (at top under options) and the “live” search – but won’t work in Safari
- fishy-10 – is… well… “fishy” but plain
- hemingwayEx- hmmm… interesting – easy to see why Hemingway is a popular theme people like playing with.
- isulong-seoph-12 – link not currently available
- tigopedia-reloaded-10 – adsense ad layout (change to YOUR pub id and channel codes)
- wp-multiflex-3-10 – has possibilities…
UPDATE After installation, and having a poke around each of the templates, I can report that things worked basically OK “out of the box” so to speak.
The only real problems I see with the default installs of these templates have to do with
- My placement of the Theme Switcher code (expected and now easily fixed in most themes)
- I lost the_excerpt feature on the home page, so these will show full posts unless I change each template
- durable wrecked the “Buy me a coffee” image blowing it up to an enormous size, despite me specifying the image width and height – finally fixed by changing the style for the “input” tag.
- Several of these themes have OPTIONS (not shown here using Theme Switcher) which you can configure from within WordPress,
- And I lost some of the extras that I had put in the earlier sidebar… oh well…
But the good thing is that by looking at these different layouts, the different features, and the code behind them, you can learn a lot!
And you really can’t get a good idea of what a theme looks like unless you can see it with your content… well at least I can’t.
Which one do you like?
