I’ve spent the last few days delving into CSS or Cascading Style Sheets, which tell a web browser how to display various elements on the page.
It’s what creates the magic in the layout behind all the different WordPress themes you can use.
I’ve been hunting for a theme or two to use on a couple of other sites I have, but haven’t had much luck in finding one…
So I thought I’d try to modify a theme I downloaded.
Arrrrggghhhhh!
This CSS stuff is not for the faint hearted! I’ve been fiddling for hours, and every time I adjust something… I get totally unexpected results! LOL!!!
It’s certainly something I will get into eventually, as I do want to create my own themes, but for now – well I’ll just stick to making VERY minor mods to existing themes. It’s a lot easier.
A basic understanding of CSS will help if you want to modify a theme slightly. And a good theme that you can fiddle with to learn the ropes is the Fusion WordPress theme. As Alex (the author) says, it’s
a good starting point to learn how to code for wordpress.
See it for yourself by selecting Fusion from the Theme Switcher in the sidebar, or by clicking here – now if only Alex had a TWO column version (left and right) for me to pull apart and see how it’s done!!!!
I’ve also installed the Southern Highlands theme – named after a beautiful area in NSW Australia, 5 hours drive south of where I live. This theme is available for download from the WordPress Themes web site and would be ideal for a craft web site.
